A traveling society · 8 players · 14 courses
Eight of us, a different course most Saturdays, skins on gross scores. Here is why that stopped working, and what we changed.
We are a traveling group — no home course, a different track most weeks, and whoever can make it that Saturday. Skins on gross scores, a few dollars in from everyone, closest to the pin on the par threes.
Simple enough to run. And at the end of every round, somebody still had to work out who won what.
Most of our group are high handicappers. On gross skins, that is not a disadvantage you play through — it is a wall. They were not losing narrowly week after week. The math had already decided.
They were not losing. They were never going to win.
You can only put money in a pot you cannot win so many times before you start finding reasons to skip a week. That is how a Saturday game quietly becomes four good players and nobody else.
Net scoring gave everyone a real shot at a skin. More formats on the same card meant more ways to win: Stableford rewards the player who makes four pars and blows up twice, and closest to the pin does not care about your index at all.
And the payouts stopped taking half an hour. We always settled before we left the course, but it meant laying the scorecards out side by side and working down them hole by hole — hoping the columns lined up and that everyone's handwriting was legible. Twenty to thirty minutes after the last group came in.
Now the totals are done the moment the last score lands — no cards to line up, nothing to read twice.
December 2025 – July 2026
Four formats running side by side on one card, every week, with the money accounted for to the dollar.
The Free plan covers a group of up to 10 players — every format above, no card, no app for your players to download.
Full disclosure: This is my own group. I built ScoringHQ for them because I was the one doing the math.
