Your spreadsheet works. Until it's Saturday afternoon.

Most groups start with a shared sheet and a column per player. It holds up fine — right until the round ends, everyone's hungry, and you're the one holding the scorecards.

What actually goes wrong

Nobody minds the spreadsheet on a Tuesday. They mind it at four o'clock on Saturday.

The math is fine. The transcription isn't.: Your formulas are correct. What breaks is reading someone's 6 as a 5, or a score landing in the wrong row, or the player who wrote his net in the gross column. You won't catch it — someone else will next week, when the standings look wrong.
One person owns it.: The sheet lives on your machine, in your format, with your formulas. Nobody else can run a round while you're away, and handing it over means explaining a system only you understand.
Handicaps are a second job.: Another sheet, or a paid service, or a printed list you copy onto scorecards by hand. Either way it happens every week, before anyone can tee off.
Side games multiply the work.: Skins alone means comparing cards hole by hole. Add closest to the pin and a blind draw and you're running three calculations that all have to agree before you hand out a dollar.
Nobody else can see it.: Players text you to ask where they stand. That isn't their fault — the sheet is the only copy, and it's on your laptop.

You don't give up your format. Stroke play, Stableford, skins, scrambles, best ball, Nassau with your press rules, Wolf, Vegas — with your buy-ins and your payout split. If your group has a house rule, it's a setting rather than a compromise.

You keep the clubhouse too. Plenty of groups enjoy calling the scores out at the end. The only difference is that the numbers are already right when you get there.
